Fortinet Launches Channel Technology Specializations Across Its International Region
Fortinet Launches Channel Technology Specializations Across Its International Region
Dedicated to Gold and Silver Partners, the New Program Aims at Supporting Fortinet’s End-to-End IT Security Strategy
SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 12, 2011 – Fortinet® (NASDAQ: FTNT) – a leading network security provider and worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions – today announced that it has launched new Technology Specializations for its Gold and Silver partners across its international area. The new partner program aims at supporting Fortinet’s strategy of providing end-to-end IT security solutions with the sales of its FortiMail™, FortiWeb™, and FortiDB™ product lines.
Fortinet’s FortiPartner Program (FPP) is based on four tiers – gold, silver, bronze and Managed Security Services Providers (MSSPs) – with the selective recruitment of top-tier partners to differentiate those fairly, based on their level of commitment. Fortinet’s channel program focuses on value, dedication and incentive, through benefits such as attractive profit margins, access to marketing programs and sales tools, technology leadership and a superior training & certification program.
Today, Fortinet’s new Technology Specializations aim at helping the vendor’s gold and silver partners benefit from new business opportunities within the IT security market while giving them enhanced differentiation and reward within Fortinet’s channel. Clear requirements based on sales targets, technical certification and marketing activities must be met in order to be elected for one of the Specialists programs.
“Fortinet’s continues to gain market share and grow revenues, thanks to its technology performance and innovation, but also its focused channel strategy driven by differentiation and incentive,” said Emilio Roman, Vice President of International Sales Operations at Fortinet. “We continuously look at improving our partner program to attract and retain value-added resellers with a strong presence on their domestic markets. With more than 200 partners signing up every quarter, the latest specializations aim at further structuring our channel and rewarding our high-value partners, which truly invest in our brand, technology and products.”
The four new Technology Specialization programs are:
- FortiMail and FortiWeb Specialist: Fortinet partners at Silver or Gold level can specialize in two specific Fortinet product families: FortiMail (email security) and FortiWeb (Web application and XML firewalls). The two technology specializations enable partners to :
- Access to the highest discount level of the FortiPartner Program (Gold Partner level)
- Access to FortiMail and/or FortiWeb marketing programs and promotional campaigns
- Get priority access to FortiMail and/or FortiWeb lead generation programs for business differentiation
- Use the FortiMail and/or FortiWeb Specialist logo for branding purposes
- Fortinet Technology Expert is the highest level of specialization and is dedicated to Gold and Silver partners, which are FortiGate Certified and have already qualified as both FortiMail Specialist and FortiWeb Specialist. Fortinet Technology Experts are entitled to the most competitive discounts across the entire Fortinet product range and are referenced by Fortinet as best partner.
- FortiDB Partnership is dedicated to MSSPs, consulting organizations or system integrators offering database security or audit services to third-party customers that are under regular or external audits and whose data is deemed critical (personal or confidential).
“With the extension of its product line to cover the broader IT security needs of the enterprise, Fortinet reinforces its position of top security player while generating further business value to its partners. We are excited to be part of Fortinet’s channel network, sharing a common strategy based on advanced technical expertise, strong sales support and value-adding services.” said Olivier Breittmayer, President at Exclusive Networks.
A kick-off campaign on Fortinet’s new specialization programs is being rolled out until June 2011 to recruit new Technology Specialists. Fortinet will assist its partners in sales, technical and marketing, and will provide all the tools and processes necessary to reach new customers, develop their skills, deploy products and maximize the partnership.

Sophos: Osama bin Laden dead – so watch for the spams and scams
Google’s top-trending Anglophone search term right now is, understandably, “osama bin laden dead”.
Google officially describes its hotness (you couldn’t make this stuff up) as volcanic.
The short version, according to the LA Times, is that bin Laden was tracked to a “comfortable mansion surrounded by a high wall in a small town near Islamabad, Pakistan’s capital.”
For bin Laden, it seems, the comfort is no more. “On Sunday, a ‘small team’ of Americans raided the compound. After a firefight, [President Obama], they killed Bin Laden.” Apparently, DNA tests have confirmed Bin Laden’s identity.
And there you have it.
Now you know the basics – but watch out for the links you’re likely to come across in email or on social networking sites offering you additional coverage of this newsworthy event.
Many of the links you see will be perfectly legitimate links. But at least some are almost certain to be dodgy links, deliberately distributed to trick you into hostile internet territory.
If in doubt, leave it out!
Sometimes, poisoned content is rather obvious. The links in this spam captured by SophosLabs, for example, give the impression of going to a news site:

The links don’t go anywhere of the sort, of course. Wherever you click, you end up finding out how to replace your tired old windows:

But even well-meant searches using your favourite search engine might end in tears.
What’s commonly called “Black-Hat Search Engine Optimisation” (BH-SEO) means that cybercrooks can often trick the secret search-ranking algorithms of popular search engines by feeding them fake pages to make their rotten content seem legitimate, and to trick you into visiting pages which have your worst interests at heart.
Well-known topics that have been widely written about for years are hard to poison via BH-SEO. The search engines have a good historical sense of which sites are likely to be genuinely relevant if your interest is searches like “Commonwealth of Australia”, “Canadian Pacific Railway” or “Early history of spam”.
But a search term which is incredibly popular but by its very nature brand new – “Japanese tsunami”, “William and Kate engagement”, “Kate Middleton wedding dress” or, of course, “Osama bin Laden dead” – doesn’t give the search engines much historical evidence to go on.
Of course, the search engines want to be known for being highly responsive to new trends – that means more advertising revenue for them, after all – and that means, loosely speaking, that they have to take more of a chance on accuracy.
What can you do to keep safe?
* Don’t blindly trust links you see online, whether in emails, on social networking sites, or from searches. If the URL and the subject matter don’t tie up in some obvious way, give it a miss.
* Use an endpoint security product which offers some sort of web filtering so you get early warning of poisoned content. (Sophos Endpoint Security and Control and the Sophos Web Appliance are two examples.)
* If you go to a site expecting to see information on a specific topic but get redirected somewhere unexpected – to a “click here for a free security scan” page, for instance, or to a survey site, or to a “download this codec program to view the video” dialog – then get out of there at once. Don’t click further. You’re being scammed.

Fortinet February Threat Landscape Report Highlights New Zero-Day Vulnerabilities
SpyEye Botnet Enters Top 10 List and Credit Card Phishing Campaign Email Allows Attackers to Easily Intercept Login Credentials
SUNNYVALE, CA — (MARKET WIRE) — 03/02/11 — Fortinet® (NASDAQ: FTNT) — a leading network security provider and the worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions — today announced its February 2011 Threat Landscape report, which details five zero-day vulnerabilities found in Cisco (FGA-2011-03), Adobe (FGA-2011-06) and Microsoft (FGA-2011-04) products. FortiGuard Labs worked diligently with these companies to address and disclose these vulnerabilities as part of its responsible disclosure program, which includes more than 125 zero-day vulnerability discoveries to date.
Microsoft also issued a zero-day security advisory regarding an information disclosure vulnerability with Internet Explorer and MHTML, making it possible under certain conditions for attackers to inject a client-side script in the response of a Web request run in the context of the victim’s Internet Explorer. The script could spoof content, disclose information or take any action that the user could take on the affected Web site on behalf of the targeted user.
SpyEye Botnet Activity Surges
The SpyEye Botnet entered the Threat Landscape Report’s Top 10 Malware listing for the first time this month, signaling a possible shift of criminal organizations around the world that had previously employed the Zeus botnet. Historically, Zeus developers have made efforts to avoid detection and analysis on their configuration files by prepending garbage (red herrings) before data structures. Last year, FortiGuard Labs analyzed an emerging mobile component of Zeus, known as Zitmo and recently noted that Zitmo.B has resurfaced with both a Symbian and Windows Mobile version that was actively in the wild.
“We’re likely to see similar ongoing activity by the SpyEye group, such as routine obfuscation of their data and command and control transmissions,” said Derek Manky, senior security strategist at Fortinet. “SpyEye developers are also working to make their product more efficient in terms of management and automation, which is evidenced by the bot’s new Automatic Transfer System.”
New Credit Card Phishing Email
This month FortiGuard Labs observed a new credit card phishing email, which employs a scare tactic that says the account has been “in violation of policies.” In the example discovered, the highlighted link pointed to a rogue domain that did not belong to the card vendor — however, streamed authentic content from card vendor’s site.
“Always observe these types of traits before clicking on links,” Manky said. “In this case, clicking the link would direct the victim to a landing site located at a datacenter in Bangkok. This landing site would then redirect the user to a server in China, which borrowed content from the legitimate credit card site using a proxy. This man-in-the-middle setup allowed the attackers to easily intercept login credentials along the way.”
Once these credentials are obtained, it becomes very easy for criminals to launder stolen funds through the likes of anonymous transferring services and money mules.
FortiGuard Labs compiled threat statistics and trends for February based on data collected from FortiGate® network security appliances and intelligence systems in production worldwide. Customers who use Fortinet’s FortiGuard Services should be protected against this vulnerability with the appropriate configuration parameters in place.
FortiGuard Services offer broad security solutions including antivirus, intrusion prevention, Web content filtering and anti-spam capabilities. These services help protect against threats on both application and network layers. FortiGuard Services are updated by FortiGuard Labs, which enables Fortinet to deliver a combination of multi-layered security intelligence and zero-day protection from new and emerging threats. For customers with a subscription to FortiGuard, these updates are delivered to all FortiGate®, FortiMail™ and FortiClient™ products.
The full February Threat Landscape report, which includes the top threat rankings in several categories, is available now. Ongoing research can be found in the FortiGuard Center or via FortiGuard Labs’ RSS feed. Additional discussion on security technologies and threat analysis can be found at the Fortinet Security Blog and Fortinet’s monthly Security Minute videocast.

Fortinet Launches Powerful Operating System Upgrades That Extend Wireless Networking and Integrated Security for Wired and Wireless Networks
Fortinet Launches Powerful Operating System Upgrades That Extend Wireless Networking and Integrated Security for Wired and Wireless Networks
FortiOS Firmware Release Introduces Unique Wireless Controller Extensions and Active Profiling for Behavior-Based Policy Enforcement
SUNNYVALE, CA — (MARKET WIRE) — 02/14/11 — Fortinet® (NASDAQ: FTNT) — a leading network security provider and the worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions — today announced a new release of its FortiOS™ 4.0 operating system for the FortiGate product family, including today’s newly introduced FortiGate-3140B multi-threat security appliance. Fortinet will showcase these and other products at the RSA Conference in Booth #923 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco from February 14-18. (Editors Note: Please see today’s announcement regarding Fortinet’s launch of the FortiGate-3140B security appliance.)
The broad advancements offered in the FortiOS 4.0 MR3 operating system introduce wireless controller extensions that support automatic provisioning of wireless access points, detection and suppression of rogue access points, multiple authentication methods and strengthened unified management of both wired and wireless networks from a single FortiGate platform. The upgrade also introduces active profiling and flow-based threat inspection enhancements to the robust OS that already integrates firewall, virtual private network (VPN), intrusion prevention (IPS), antivirus, application control and many other security technologies.
Expanded Wireless Options
With the release of FortiOS 4.0 MR3, powerful new security features and performance enhancements are now available for FortiGate consolidated security appliances. The advanced FortiOS operating system expands the wireless controller capabilities of any FortiGate running FortiOS 4.0 MR3. These capabilities improve security by enabling role-based access control to limit access to regulated, proprietary, or confidential data based upon a user’s role, as well as allowing customers to meet wireless PCI DSS compliance with improved rogue AP on-wire detection and suppression and integrated management and reporting for both wireless connectivity and security.
As a complement to this firmware feature, Fortinet is also introducing the FortiAP-222B outdoor wireless access point (AP), which completes the FortiAP family of access points and allows enterprise-wide wifi coverage across the campus with seamless roaming. The FortiAP-222B is a high power dual-radio outdoor thin AP that provides wireless client access or air monitor in a ruggedized weather-resistant enclosure. This device will benefit enterprises looking to extend their wireless network to challenging non-temperature controlled environments, or beyond the physical footprint of a building or campus. The simple-to-manage-and-deploy FortiAP-222B uses an industry leading high gain 27dB transmit output and highly sensitive receiver which permits coverage to a vast area.
FortiOS Inspection Enhancements
The advanced FortiOS operating system features active profiling that provides the ability to use a form of behavioral analysis to create and actively enforce policies based on deviations from corporate, group or individual baseline profiles. A range of policy enforcement options is available for suspicious behavior, including monitoring, quarantining and/or outright blocking.
Flow-based inspection enhancements included with the FortiOS operating system enable more powerful Web filtering and traffic shaping features, interface-based “one-arm” IPS, and advanced data loss prevention (DLP) capabilities. Flow-based inspection also leverages FortiASIC processors to further accelerate anti-virus, application control, IPS and IPv6 firewall inspection. Customers can now select the flow-based or proxy-based security technologies best suited to their unique network environment and risk tolerance.
Other important FortiOS 4.0 MR3 operating system enhancements include:
Stronger Authentication: Two-factor authentication via FortiToken, SMS messaging and email is enabled. FortiToken supports one-time password authentication, IPSec and SSL VPN authentication, and administrator and firewall login.
Expanded Compliance: Extensions in vulnerability scanning have been added to support rogue access point detection and suppression in wireless networks. PCI DSS compliance requires periodic detection and removal of unauthorized wireless devices.
Setup Wizards: New HTML-based wizards streamline the setup of all FortiGate consolidated security appliances. Setup of basic, as well as advanced firewall, UTM, dual-WAN, and remote VPN security features is now faster and easier.
“Fortinet’s strong footing in security combined with our wireless innovation creates an opportunity for companies that need high-performance, secure wireless environments that offer broad protection and the benefits of integrated security,” said Michael Xie, founder, CTO and vice president of engineering at Fortinet. “By innovating across hardware, software and wireless dimensions, we continue to meet the evolving security requirements of our worldwide customer base.”
Availability
FortiOS 4.0 MR3 and the FortiAP-222B will be available this quarter.
